15 Years ago in the town of Dalestone County.
It was a night of mid-April when the Mayor hosted a party on
its mansion inviting friends, rich and famous people in town. One of those was
Dr. Sheldon Williams, a respected prominent surgeon in the country. Along with
him was his wife Margaret who was also a Pediatric Doctor and their son Anthony
and also expected to be in field of medicine just like his parents. Anthony was
only 20 years old that time, feeling out place at the party he just found
himself isolated on another living room of the mansion which was not occupied
by visitors. There was a huge aquarium filled different kinds and colors of
aquarium fishes. He was enjoying watching those beautiful creatures when
suddenly a beautiful hazel eyes staring at him captures his attention. He fixed
himself slowly walked behind to the other side of aquarium to meet the owner of
those eyes. There was in front of him a young lady about a few years younger
than him. Mesmerized with her long loose dark brown straight hair, dressed in a
pale mint green simple yet sophisticated gown matching her eyes. She was just
timidly standing behind the aquarium and before Anthony could say hello, his
mom came frantically looking and calling him.
After he was introduced to some friends at the party,
Anthony went back on that room but the girl was not there. He looked for her
around elsewhere until he reached the balcony where the garden can be seen from there. He saw the mysterious girl on her way to the
garden and sat down on the swing near the fountain pond. He just can’t get his
eyes off of her as she gently swinging
on the swing. She saw and gave a sweet smile and he waved at her. But later the
rain fall but she kept on swinging and seems enjoying with the rain. He finds
her mysterious and weird but something magical happened inside him as if he
feels like he had known her before. Then later he heard a scolding voice
calling her “ Mary Elizabeth “, stupid
girl you’re soaking in the rain again. And there goes her
fat nanny with umbrella trying to fetch her. “ So you are Mary Elizabeth “, Anthony
whispers to himself with a smile.
The party was ended but he never gets a chance to talk to
her. He never ever see or meet her again
since that night, but he keeps on wondering why she always appear in his dreams, that hazel eyed girl swinging
under the rain.
15 Years after …
Anthony is now a resident Doctor in Dalsestone Hospital
& Home for the aged. One of his most
cared patient was Mr. Martin Bailey, an
82 years old with Lung cancer . He often thinks Anthony was his grandson, and
he resembles his late older brother . To make the other aging patients and
nurses believe, he always had with him and show them the old and almost
torn-out photo of his brother Adam. And he actually looks like Anthony. While Anthony is busy with his career, he
almost forgot about having a girlfriend. She had some before but it always
didn’t worked out. His parents were worried and arranged him blind dates but
still didn’t worked-out for him. Aside from being a Doctor, travelling and oil
painting were his favorite hobbies. And he still keep on seeing that Mary
Elizabeth in his dreams once in a while,
and everytime she appears in his sleep, he paints her when he wakes up. One of
his painting of her hanged in his office at the hospital. There was a time Mr.
Bailey sneaked into his office and found the painting. He stared closely at the painting and said
quite confused, “ Marybeth? “ .. Anthony heard him and asked him right away if
he knows that girl. Martin moved away
from the painting stand in front of the
window, trying to remember something . “ Do you want to hear a story? “ Anthony
said yes and he began telling him about the story of his brother Adam and
Marybeth.
Long ago in Grimsville town,
the famous blacksmith Mr. Bailey have two sons Martin was only 13 back
then and Adam just turned 20. Mr. Bailey was a loyal blacksmith especially
working for the wealthy family Benett and Mrs. Bailey was their female butler ,
while Adam is taking care of the horses and Martin is he helping him after school.
Adam secretly admires Marybeth. But he knows his place, he keeps it with
himself and contented with just staring her from afar. And with just piece crap
of wood he sculpt and curved Marybeth.
Marybeth was only 17 years old that time. Sweet , young and very
beautiful only daughter of Benett the second child along with her 2 siblings,
older and younger brother.
One day there was family reunion in Family Benett. Their
Aunts, Uncles and cousins came. Marybeth and her cousins just like they used to
play when they were just a little kids, they played hide and seek. Marybeth found herself a hide in their
workers quarters. Unintentionally she went to hide in Adam’s little room. And she found the little sculpture of hers.
She was astound and amazed. She gently touches it with her bare hands. Suddenly Adam came in. Hurriedly he took away
the craft humbly saying he was terribly sorry and promise to dispose it right
away. But Marybeth stopped him and said keep it because it was amazingly
beautiful. Then he asked him if he’s the one who made it, and requested him to
make her more of this wooden statue. That she will come often to be a model of his
art. She convinced him that he has this gift and he should make use of it.
Since then Adam was never been very happy that at least Marybeth at last make
friends with him. But that friendship later on made Marybeth feel something
unusual, she is falling in love with him. Not looking at Adam’s social status,
he’s actually a type of guy Marybeth would fall in love with. He was a man
enough, gentle, good looking, smart, a
very kind hearted one. Who would say he is not an elite if only he would dress
like one of them.
It was another afternoon of April; the flowers in the
meadows are blooming. Marybeth asked Adam to accompany her in her horse ride to
the hills and meadows. Adam refused once because it’s getting late and seems
going to rain, but Marybeth insisted.
They were in the meadows and the heavy rain came. Instead of
running and find a shed, Marybeth just like a child plays in the rain. And she
didn’t stop Adam until Adam was convinced to play run and chase with her. Later
they found themselves a shed in a little on the hill. That was an intimate
moment, there were too close and Adam could almost forget and about to give in
at Marybeth’s tempting kiss. But he suddenly came back to his senses. The rain
almost stops and he convinced Marybeth that they should get back home.
Back to the present….
Suddenly someone’s knocking on the door, it was the nurse
giving reminders that it’s time for Mr. Baileys medicine and time to rest as
well.
Few hours later, “I’ve been waiting… What took you so long to
come? Please Comeback.. “
Then the ticking of the clock alarm interrupted. It was 4:00
AM and Anthony dreamt of her again, this time it’s different, she used to be
smiling in the rain, this time she seems to be crying.
On his way to his clinic, Anthony called his researcher
friend Danny to research for him any records about Marybeth Benett. He passed by on a starbucks to buy his coffee
and Mr. Bailey’s favorite latte. While
he is paying in the cashier at the same time talking to Danny on the phone. As
he turned around and seeing some people outside passing by the coffee shop.
Suddenly there’s a girl who pass by wearing a black hooded coat, their eyes met
before he turn back his attention to the cashier. When he turns around to look
again, she’s gone. In a rush he stepped out of the shop trying to catch that
girl, she really look exactly like Elizabeth aged a bit. He was following a
girl with the same coat and he took a courage to tap her shoulder, when the
look it wasn’t her.
Anthony later arrived at Mr. Bailey’s room. He mentioned to
him that he thinks he just saw Beth, but he wasn’t able to catch her. He also
tell the grandpa that he is bothered about his vision of her last night, why
Marybeth is grieving. Grandpa took a sip
of his latte and continues the story.
Marybeth got a flue because of soaking in the cold rain.
Adam was scolded by Mr. and Mrs. Bailey that even though Beth insisted he
should not allow it knowing that she is
quite unhealthy ever since she was a child. This made him restless and worried
that it’s been 3 days he didn’t saw Beth. When he heard from his mom and other
maids talking that Beth is finally fine and just needing a little more rest. He sneaks at Marybeth’s room through the
window. Beth let him in and brought with him the little wooden figurine he just
made for her. He was amazed at Beth’s
big and beautiful room, not even a
quarter of his place. He found her violin, “ do you play it? “ he asked .. “ Yes,
would you like to hear it? “ she offered… “ Can I? “.. Beth took violin
and they sat down on her huge, pink mattress and she played him a music while
he is vividly listening and watching.
Suddenly Mrs. Bennett is knocking on the door, frantically they don’t
know what to do then she hides him inside her cabinet. Inside the cabinet, he
just silently listening to Beth and her mom’s conversation. Mrs. Bennett just told her that she should be
better tomorrow because his father is
hosting a dinner party inviting their elite friends and the Ross family is
coming, that she will be introduced to the
heir of Ross, Lt.Col. Edmund Ross. Mrs. Bennett seems to be excited and told her before she left the room that
she will like Edmund, while Beth is actually spiteful and don’t like that idea.
In the night of party, Marybeth played her violin. She is stunning
on her light pink gown and glowing at the center of the aisle while performing
her piece. Adam is watching from a distance he was reminded that he shouldn’t
like nor fall in love with her, it’s impossible, she is out of his reach. Later
Edmund was introduced to her. He asked
her a dance and she cannot refuse, they lead the floor and the rest followed.
While everyone is laughing and enjoying the night, all night Marybeth is just faking her smile.
Adam finally went back to his quarter thinking that he
shouldn’t be forever a servant of Bennett,
he needs to go outside and seek for a new job a new life at best for
him.
With his parents’ permission Adam finds a new job on a
construction site near the seaport. He
rented a small room near his new working place where he can stay. It’s been more than a week already since Adam
left the Bennett’s land. While Beth never stops on troubling the young Martin
until he tells her where Adam stays.
Adam arrives at his place and Marybeth was waiting sitting
almost fallen asleep outside his door.
“ Miss Bennett..” he said as he was standing in front of
her, that makes Beth gain her senses back.
She then fixed herself, faced him showing a little
disappointment. He invited her inside telling her that she might get sick
staying outside. Adam asked her how she get there, she did not confess that it
was through Martin but Adam guessed it. She asked him why he just left without
even just saying a word to her, that it’s unfair. Adam asked her back why
should he need to say goodbye to her, he can leave anytime he wants. He tells
her, she shouldn’t be there. “ But we
are friends right?, and I think it’s just normal to at least we could say
farewell.” .. she explained.. “ But you
shouldn’t be here.. “ he answered? … “ Why? “ she whiningly asked …
then Abeline was standing right to his door holding a bowl of soup.. “ My bad..
I guess I’m in a wrong timing.. sorry to interrupt .“
“ No worry Abeline this young lady is about to leave.. Right
Miss Bennett..”
“ And so this is why? Sorry to bother you” .. before she
left Beth put on the table a box wrapped in linen cloth she brought. . “ I’ll
just leave it here.. I practiced baking but I guess I’m a failure, it’s little burnt you can throw it away if
you like.” .. Annoyed and pissed, Beth walked away from Adam’s place.
“ I cooked a lot it, and I’m thinking maybe you didn’t have
your dinner yet..” Abeline explained while handing over the bowl to Adam. “
That’s very kind of you Miss, I’ll have this, but may I ask your pardon, I’m a bit drained today and need to be alone
and rest now.” In a humble voice he requested his neighbor Abeline to also
leave. When Abeline left, Adam took and open the box Beth brings to him. It was
the cookies by her effort she baked, tastes bitter and burned but Adam eats it
all, smirking but few tears windowing in the corner of his eyes.
On the other hand Beth spitefully walking toward s Martin
while he was feeding the horses. She nagged at him why he didn’t mentioned Adam
got a girlfriend and she was referring at Abeline. Martin laughed teasing her
she was jealous. Martin tells her Abeline is just his brother’s neighbor, maybe
with a crush on him but she’s not Adam’s type.. “ I think my brother is in love
with somebody.. and what if it was Miss Beth…. But it cannot be, right? ” Martin carry the bucket leaving Marybeth
speechless with a teasing smile at the horses stable.
On a Sunday, after the mass, Beth decided to meet and reunite her childhood friends on fast
food chain near the church. Beth heard from one of her friend Linda Baker that
her mom looking for a creative sculptor. Beth tells her she knows one. Beth is
thinking how to tell Adam now she is hesitating to meet him worrying he might
don’t like to see her again. What she did is wrote it on a piece of paper like
a classified ads and left it at his door. When Adam finds it, he gave himself a
try. Mrs. Baker was very satisfied with his job , gave him a compliment and
extra pay and word that he will recommend him to her friends as well. Beth saw
all that what’s happening to Adam and she is happy for him but not happy for
herself. Especially that night dinner together of Family Bennett and Ross, and
a plan of her soon engagement to Edmund Ross was announced by Mr. Bennett. Adam
also knew about it, it was the topic in
town and Martin personally told. Adam stays tough in pretending it’s nothing
with him.
It was late night and Adam cannot sleep. He got up and
decided to take a walk outside. When he open his door, he was shocked to see
Marybeth was there outside his door trembling in cold. He immediately took her
in placing her near the fireplace and wrap her in his blanket. He gave her a cup
of hot tea to drink and sat in front of her with a silly question... “ What am I going to do with you Marybeth ? “
“ You really don’t care… do you? “ Adam wasn’t able to
answer.. “ I don’ t want to marry that guy, why can’t they understand that !!
Why can’t they understand that I’m love with somebody else.. And… why you’re so
numb not see that somebody is you.. “ and her tears cannot stop falling.. Adam can’t
stand her looking like that, he stood up
and came to assist holding her arms saying, “ let me take you home..”
Beth push him away and stand up by herself and move towards
the door. She walks and walk while Adam following her behind. “ Adam, You’re
such a coward.. You’re so stupid to that
to a fine lady you love the most.. Why can’t you be a man and admit it. “ he
whispers to himself.
Adam ran after her , and standing right in front of her and
gently cupped her face with his two palms..
“ Marybeth, I’m
terribly sorry to do this..” without any hesitations, Adam finally gave in to what
he actually feels as gently embrace and passionately kiss her.
Finally Adams confessed his love for and assures Beth that
together they will find a way to break her engagement with Edmund Ross. But at
the moment he should take Marybeth safely home.
They keep their affair hidden and secretly meeting each
other and no matter what they do they cannot escape her engagement with Edmund
and the worst thing happened their relationship was discovered and made Mr.
Bennett and Ross to set the wedding date the soonest.
Marybeth then convinced Adam to ran away. Because it seems
there’s no other way and she don’t want to be separated with him. Adam cannot
assure that he can give Marybeth the life that she used to be but give his best
, to work harder, and be responsible
enough with the path choose, to be with her.
They ran away from Grimsville going to the west in more urbanized town of Dalestone County. With Adam’s few savings the started a simple living in this town. The Mayor and the church could not marry them without Marybeth’s parents’ consent. And so they made their own wedding ceremony. Because Adam is skillful and smart it wasn’t hard for him to find a job and he found himself a good job in a furniture factory. While Beth is left at rented place trying her best to become a good wife to Adam, though Adam just keep on persisting the meals prepared by Beth. Beth gave her St.Benedict cross necklace to Adam believing it will keep him safe.
One day Adam arrived home and found Beth unconscious. He
rushed her at the nearest hospital. The doctor tells him about her heart
disease which is getting worst a needs a transplant as soon as possible for her
to live longer. The Doctor inform him later there’s a donor in New York Hospital and he can recommend
them but Adam is not financially capable to sustain it. He took Marybeth back
to their apartment not mentioning anything about it. Instead Adam calls his
father advice, and even Mr. & Mrs. Bailey didn’t know where are they. Mr. Bailey told him that if you really love her,
let her live, he knows what he ought to do.
Adam went home Beth bringing her a present. It was a pretty
white dress and Beth liked it very much.
“ I want you to see wearing that on Sunday? ” he said.. “ And where are we going? “ she
asked.
“It’s a surprise”.. he
mysteriously answered….
It’s Sunday and Beth looks very pretty innocent in her white
dress. They attended the mass, had a lunch date and movie. Lastly
while they were walking hand in hand in the amusement park, Beth asked him..
“ What is something
very special today and we have to do all of this, did you earn extra income,
better job? C’mon tell me? “ ….
“ Nothing… I just
want to let you know that I Love You…. More than you are aware of.”
“ I love You Adam, even if there’s another life I will still
choose to love you..”
“ And if really there’s
I will not be born like this, but someone your family can be proud of. “
“ Don’t say that, I’m proud of no matter who you are..” she
answered
Then he kissed her on her forehead and hug her so tightly..
“ By the way Beth, I want you to stay here .. I’ll just
something ok? “
“ Ok… But please comeback soon… I’ll just wait here.. “
Present…………..
Martin was silenced then a moment..
“ So what happened, did Adam never came back? “
Granpa Martin continues……
“ Adam left Beth in park and Edmund Ross along with her
parents later came to fetch her. Edmund marry Beth and bring her in New York
and made her heart transplant successfully. Adam decided to join the army and
was sent in Western Europe. When I turned
16, I followed my brother. It was me who
brought misfortune to Adam, if not because of him I’m here with you now telling
his story. He made me promise to give this necklace back to Marybeth along with
a box of his un-mailed letters. But even that promise I wasn’t able to
make. I was late, a year after when I
found her it was in her funeral. She died bearing that Edmund Ross child. “
“ So it’s possible that Mary Elizabeth I met 15 years ago
was Marybeth grand child. “
“ And she has Marybeth’s soul and you are my brother Adam .
That’s why you have to find her , you’ve got to find Marybeth back to you. And
when you found her return this necklace, it belongs to her. ” Grandpa
Martin utters..
Later received an email from Danny that when Marybeth Bennett
Ross died bearing a son named Edmund Ross II married and had daughter who
exactly look and act like her late grandmother so they named her after her. She
was Mary Elizabeth Ross. And just like grandmother, she also suffering a
chronic heart disease and also needs a transplant a soon as possible. Her case
is severe now and they can’t find a donor.
Anthony finds her home address but she’s not there. Then her
nanny mentioned she might be in the amusement park. Anthony immediately stepped into his car
heading to the park. There exactly to the place where Adam left Beth , Mary was
there sitting on the bench. She never
took her hazel eyes on Anthony coming towards her. I finally he was able to say
hello.. Then he said he came to see her to return something that belongs to her
then he laid the St. Benedict cross necklace on her palm and put box beside
her.
“ I’ve been going here for 15 years, what took you so long?
“ she asked…
Anthony scratched his head and sat beside her..
“ I’m a doctor and how would you expect someone like me to
be in the stuff like this..” he said
“ You don’t believe? … me either but how this all happen,
how can I just ignore you keep appearing in my dreams and I hate you because
you always left and bring my heart with you, see I’m dying.”
And they just talk
and laugh everything about it … that
weird thing happening to them.
“ But if it’s really true, lets accept the fact that that I
will die sooner or later… If there’s really another lifetime, would you
recognize me? Mary asked
“ In another lifetime if my eyes couldn’t recognize you, maybe my heart will do. “
It was almost 7pm and
a gentle rain falling yet the moon is still rising.. And the stay soaked in the
rain.
Anthony safely send Mary home. And on his way home he got an
emergency call from Dalestone Home for the aged informing him that Grandpa
Bailey just passed away. The rain was getting heavy and the road is slippery,
Anthony didn’t notice a truck with loosing break fast approaching towards him.
“ Please forgive me,
all my love Marybeth, You are the Moon of my April Rain.
My heart it always belongs to you.. “
Mary wakes up in the
middle of the night and she suddenly cry without even clearly knowing why.
The next day the Ross family got a call from the hospital
that they just found a heart donor for
Mary Elizabeth.
